Relinquishment is trauma

As we now understand, adoption creates trauma, and it is towards the wider acceptance of this fact that I and my colleagues at How to be Adopted work.

If you have not already heard of Paul Sunderland, look him up. His work is fascinating and endlessly enlightening. Meanwhile, listen to this amazing interview which highlights the struggles and how they have been found to run through the lives of adoptees.

The word relinquishment upsets many, especially those who have adopted in a context of love. But relinquishment creates trauma on a limbic level. That is to say that our emotional brains have been damaged by the early separation from biological mothers.
